Model Release

5/23/2017

A topic that crops up a lot more than it should is model release forms (plural) there should be one release form for 90% of the models we use, a catch-all version that covers all media and every eventuality in all territories. I may be over simplifying the matter but I have seen many versions that fail to use the term “all media”. last year I had a small job where the agency produced the release but failed to mention social media or use the words “all media”…. Mayhem!
If you think that the term “all media” is too vague you must list every media format that you can think of.
We want the talent to be paid well for their work and they or their agents will negotiate a fee based on usage so a tailored release will be produced in those instances but for the other 90%, for extras, background or secondary talent a safe standard universal model release should be used.
I have linked my current release form, I am sure that a lawyer would see many flaws but all is all, all is everything, no ambiguity there…. I think!

My Father's Camera

As this is my first post I wanted to scribble something relevant and I suppose in a way this is.
After my Father died I was going through his stuff and found his old camera along with a ton of black and white prints and negs, I sifted through the pictures over a couple of days and realised that he had recorded our family history extremely well, unlike myself (I must take more happysnaps).
I am not sentimental about many things but when I peered through his camera it dawned on me what this lens had witnessed and for how many hours my father would have held it.
My father-in-law was never without his camera or indeed his 8mm Bolex cine camera and he photographed anything from his family to vintage car hill climbs, thousands of pictures and a very eclectic mix.
so these cameras have little cash value but the cameras and the images they created have enormous value to the individual Families.
I know I am stating the bleeding obvious here but I see these cameras for sale all the time and wonder why they are not collecting dust in a box waiting for the next generation to find them and ponder the value……They have no cash value..keep them!
